From Douro to 397 MW: How Bankable Execution Built a Long-Term Partnership with Zagope

In utility-scale solar, relationships are tested under real construction pressure. A supplier can meet a specification on paper, but long-term trust is earned on site: when ground conditions change, schedules tighten, engineering continues to evolve, and every decision affects cost and delivery.
For GameChange Energy and Zagope, the 149 MWdc Douro PV plant in northern Portugal became that proof point. The project brought together difficult geology, steep terrain, an accelerated manufacturing and installation program, and demanding project visibility requirements. Its successful execution did more than deliver one plant. It became the catalyst for a five-project collaboration totaling 397 MWdc across Portugal.

The Project That Set the Standard
Located in Tarouca, in the Viseu district, Douro was not a site where a standard mounting approach could simply be repeated. Hard granitic formations made conventional post driving difficult and increased the risk of extensive drilling. Slopes exceeding 15% complicated the coordination of civil works, post positioning, and table alignment. At the same time, manufacturing had to begin before the final site layout was fully resolved.
These constraints put the project economics and schedule under pressure at the same time. The response had to control the CAPEX impact of foundations, preserve buildable area, support rapid installation, and give Zagope clear visibility throughout engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and construction.
Engineering Around the Site
GameChange Energy designed the solution around the conditions on the ground. Its in-house geotechnical engineering team used the available geotechnical reports and pull-test data to identify where standard post driving remained practical and where pre-drilling with a concrete-stabilized base was required. The objective was straightforward: use the more intensive foundation treatment only where the geology demanded it.
The MaxSpan™ fixed-tilt system also reduced the total foundation count by increasing post spacing through high-strength steel design. Even under the project’s wind and snow loading requirements, the final configuration used fewer than 215 posts per MW. Fewer foundations meant less drilling, less field labor, and a more predictable construction sequence.

Terrain adaptation required the same level of precision. The team supplied coordinates and elevations for more than 30,000 posts and completed over 20 grading analyses as the civil design developed. Articulating connections between tables and post-bracket tolerance allowed the racking to follow the existing topography while limiting grading and protecting module density.
Execution That Built Confidence
The technical solution was only one part of the project. Douro also required engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and site teams to work in parallel.
As new geotechnical and design information became available, GameChange Energy coordinated updates with Zagope, reconfigured the design, and redistributed components that had already been manufactured. That flexibility kept production moving without losing alignment with the final layout.
Logistics were managed with the same discipline. GameChange Energy’s Production Delivery System provided real-time visibility across 197 containers delivered in 22 shipments, allowing the site team, manufacturers, and carriers to work from the same information. Color-coded components, pre-assembled beams, and on-site training further simplified installation. The first completed table became the project’s “Golden Row,” a practical quality reference for the rest of the build.

For Zagope, that combination of technical responsiveness, transparent reporting, and field-focused support mattered. It reduced uncertainty at the points where complex projects are most exposed: foundations, design changes, material flow, and installation quality.
From One Project to a 397 MW Portfolio
Douro established the working model for a broader relationship. The collaboration expanded to four additional Portuguese projects: Acail at 28 MW, Riodades at 61 MW, Sendim at 120 MW, and Felgueiras at 39 MW. Together with Douro, the five plants represent 397 MWdc installed with MaxSpan™.
Repeat business at that scale is more than a commercial milestone. It is a direct measure of confidence.
